The Authority of Scripture in a Culture of Compromise
Written by Paul Dean
Friday, 13 November 2009

Compromise of any sort begins with an assault on the truth. Relativism is but one weapon that pounds away, day after day, on the notion of absolutes. As America’s new religion has been dubbed by some as “Moralistic Therapeutic Deism” one understands that for most people, God is a nice idea but He’s not someone they want to be bothered with on a regular basis. Of course, when there is no God, or when we can’t be bothered with God, there is no truth; when there is no truth, there is no authority – but oneself. Perhaps the single most destructive source of compromise in our culture is the marginalization and/or rejection of the authority of Scripture – not by unbelievers but by professing Christians.

Obama’s School Talk: Should Christians Really be Concerned?
Written by Paul Dean
Monday, 07 September 2009
Scores of Christians and conservatives are denouncing President Obama’s announced speech to children in schools across the country tomorrow. Notables like Michelle Malkin are concerned with subversive activism. Republicans are accusing the President of imposing a political agenda on the nation’s children. Other conservatives see the move as socialist indoctrination. Of course, references to certain dictators’ propagandizing of children abound. Numerous parents intend to keep their children home tomorrow.Write Comment (14 Comments)

Obama and Versions of America: How to Affect Social Change
Written by Paul Dean
Thursday, 21 May 2009
Social change is a constant need due to the reality of the inexorable encroachment of sin in a culture. A civil society must have the rule of law or the sinfulness of man will go unchecked. Justice provides a sense of fairness and redress. Liberty keeps the government and citizens from controlling the lives of others. People are free to make their own way in the world, worship as they deem best, and the gospel is allowed an entrance into the market-place of ideas. Of course, the gospel is the only message that is the power of God unto salvation and the resulting society ordered by limited government, the rule of law, liberty and justice for all, an exalted work ethic, and personal responsibility.Write Comment (30 Comments)

Generational Drift and Decay - by Michael Craven
Written by Michael Craven
Thursday, 21 May 2009
Last week we began to unpack Michael Spencer’s explosive article, “The Coming Evangelical Collapse.” Spencer’s central assertion that “we are on the verge—within 10 years—of a major collapse of evangelical Christianity” drew widespread affirmations (or resignation) from many evangelicals. Whether or not one agrees with Spencer’s conclusions, the general resonance with this article by so many evangelicals and its specific charges against the evangelical church in America warrant serious consideration.Write Comment (35 Comments)

What’s Valuable? Worldview Makes a Difference
Written by Paul Dean
Monday, 04 May 2009
What is valuable in the West continues to change as the influence of biblical Christianity continues to wane. In the same week, two different individuals highlighted this ongoing values transformation.

In an interview with the BBC, Ludwig Minelli, founder of a Swiss right-to-die group, said that suicide is a “marvelous, marvelous possibility for a human being.” He further stated, “Suicide is a very good possibility to escape a situation which you can’t alter.” At the same time, Bonnie Erbe of U.S. News and World Report, asserted that abortion is “not a bad choice” in an economic downturn.

When We Mess Up - By Jay Younts
Written by Jay Younts
Friday, 10 April 2009

"Mess up" is admittedly a euphemism. It is a term we often use to avoiding taking the full brunt of failure as a parent. For me, it is a personal term, as in, "I can't believe I messed up again." It is a phrase I said far too often as a parent, and thought even more often. Messing up, or more precisely, sinning and falling short of God's best, is a fact of life for parents. Prayer and good intentions will never eliminate failure from your parenting. Because this is true, we have a natural, fleshly tendency to become comfortable with these failures - hence the euphemistic term "mess up."

Children as Worldview Warriors
Written by Paul Dean
Wednesday, 11 March 2009

Low expectations; that’s what we have in this culture when it comes to children and/or teens. We don’t believe that children can comprehend the deep issues of life. This notion is particularly problematic in the church as we constantly play with our children in Sunday School or church rather than teach them the things of God. That trend continues in youth ministry as the primary focus is often entertainment. Such a dynamic leads to immature adults who need more than God’s word to keep them in church. They’ve been trained to be that way from their formative years.
