Cooperation Among Churches
“Baptist Identity II is a much needed conversation for Southern Baptists as we seek to better understand our history and heritage in order to build a new sense of cooperation for our shared service in the 21st century,” said David S. Dockery, president of Union University. We agree. We might add that too often in the SBC, a greater emphasis has been placed upon the Convention and its programs than real gospel advance. Cooperation has, at times, been embraced at the expense of other considerations, even truth. At other times, local church autonomy has been set aside in favor of rigid conformity. And, the SBC is no stranger to controversy. One need only mention the inerrancy debate which has served to launch other ongoing debates. What do we do about these issues as Baptists? Further, this conversation can be extended to the larger evangelical context as we struggle with the most effective way to take the gospel to the nations and the most effective way to confront our own culture with that same gospel.
Today on “Calling for Truth,” we will focus on cooperation among churches with special attention given to a lecture delivered at the “Baptist Identity Conference” at Union University in Jackson Tennessee, by Dr. Mike Day. We will touch on the broad subject of “Convention, Cooperation, and Controversy,” turn to deal with “The Future of Baptist Associations and State Conventions,” and then turn to associational work and cooperation among churches in general. While launching from a Baptist context, as always, we will make application to the larger evangelical community, particularly in terms of evangelism, missions, and legitimate cooperation between churches that hold to the essentials of the faith while differing on, for lack of a better term, secondary issues.
To help us with the discussion, we have invited Dr. Broadus Moody, Director of Missions at the Piedmont Baptist Association in Easley, SC and Johnny Touchet, Pastor of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Powdersville, SC.
Mike Day is Director of Missions for the Mid-South Baptist Association, Memphis, Tenn. He earned the D.Min. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Dr. Day, who previously served with the North American Mission Board, is highly respected for his creative leadership.
Speakers at the “Baptist Identity Conference” included Paige Patterson, Frank Page, Timothy George, David Dockery, Russell Moore, Mike Day, Thom Rainer, et.al.
