A Guide to Godly Disputation

A minister about to write an article criticizing a fellow minister for his lack of orthodoxy, wrote to John Newton of his intention. Newton replied with a letter advising the minister to be very cautious in his response. He encouraged the man to consider his thoughts under three headings; His Opponent, The Public and Himself.

With the Blogosphere, Email, Texting, Audio Files, etc. (in other words the ability for us to respond to our opponent almost instantaneously) in full operation mode, I think that it would be very wise for all of us to consider Newton’s comments very carefully.

Newton says in the introduction that although you may be right in your position, and you may be very capable of stating your position, your goal should be not only to triumph over your adversary but also over yourself. It may not be possible to vanquish you as to your argument but you may still suffer loss as to your testimony and you may find much cause to weep over your victory.

Newton offers some very helpful suggestions to keep in mind while dealing with these types of controversies. On today’s “Calling For Truth” Radio Program we will review some of these suggestions.
