Presuppositional Apologetics

For the last couple of days on the “Calling For Truth” Radio Program we have made the point about the need for civility and gentleness in our debates and discussions within the Christian community. On Monday the point was made, as we centered our thoughts on a letter written by John Newton advising a fellow minister to respond cautiously to another minister who was in theological error.

The same point (about the need for a humble spirit when addressing opposing theological views) was made during our conversation with Tom Ascol about the upcoming “Building Bridges: Southern Baptists and Calvinism” conference (Nov. 26-28, 2007).

The question for today is, do the same principles apply when speaking to non-believers? Of course the principles regarding humbleness and civility apply but what about the tendency of some believers to even give over theological points in order to not offend the other party?

In a recent blog posting entitled “When debating an atheist, don’t give up Christianity to try to prove the God of Christianity” Steve Camp offers some suggestions regarding how to engage in debate with non-Christians about the existence of God.

In the posting Camp asks, “…how should we as believers in the Lord engage nonbelievers in the public square? What does the Scriptures teach us about our methodology in this area? How should we conduct ourselves among those who do not name the name of Christ? And what can we learn from some of the apologetic blunders we have seen of late?”

He then lists a number of helpful suggestions. On today’s “Calling For Truth” Radio Program, we will discuss that list of suggestions.
