For most evangelicals, when it comes to voting, the answer is clear: the Republican deemed most likely to win. Yet, there may be a new kind of revolution underway that threatens the cohesion of that bloc that made George W. Bush President. It seems that evangelicals have found themselves at, a moment of truth.
What should have long been obvious is that Christians are Christians first, Americans second, and party members third. We must have principles that govern our political engagement. Towing the party line will never do for the follower of Christ particularly when the party platform has much in conflict with the Scriptures. A vote for the lesser of two evils is still a vote for evil.
That means we’ll have to develop a fully-orbed Christian worldview concerning political philosophy if we are to fight with God and not against Him. A vote based on feelings or submission to mere rhetoric is ultimately sinful. We must grasp the difference between issues that are both moral and the proper focus of government and those that are moral only. We must learn what it means to support the laws of nature and of nature’s God that we might continue to enjoy a free society where the gospel can be preached without fear. We must learn that voting for the front-runner, or even a Christian, is not always the Christian thing to do. If the Christian will not uphold the Constitution, grounded in biblical, natural law, and the pagan will, then voting for the pagan is the biblical course. Let’s join this new revolution for the glory of God.
