Dr. Bruce Little, Professor of Philosophy and Director of the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith & Culture at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary writes, “I remember being challenged in my own understanding of the place of theology in the Christian life when I read David Wells’ book, No Place for Truth, published in 1993. Since that time, my commitment to the primacy of theology as essential to all Christian activity has continued to mature. It seems to me that unless theology stands as primary in the church, the risk remains that much done in the name of Christ will not be done in the nature of Christ.” “If theology and practice are in any way split apart, our lives will lose the authenticity essential to our calling. Living authentically as light and salt in a place of spiritual darkness and decay requires understanding theology as something more than organizing Bible information about God. Theology must inform not only what we say to culture, but how we speak. Therefore, if Christians are to bring theology to bear upon culture they must have an adequate understanding of both theology and culture.” The issues Francis Schaeffer addressed at L'Abri, which means "The Shelter" in French, are issues Evangelical Christians are still dealing with today. In the 1950s, L'Abri opened its doors to thousands of travelers seeking information and guidance on a number of topics, most relating to faith and culture. Even today, the innovative evangelism style used by Schaeffer is renowned for its ability to reach out to the culture. This style, which he called taking the roof off, explored what he saw as the middle ground between evidentialism and presupposationalism. In preparation for the upcoming “Francis Schaeffer: A Mind and Heart for God – Engaging the Culture for Christ Conference,” Dr. Little will talk with us about the task and method of engaging the culture and the ideas that Schaeffer propagated in that area. We’ll talk about being thoroughly Christian as we seek to be salt and light in this world. The conference will be held on the campus of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, November 7-8, 2008. Join us for an exciting time of learning about Schaeffer's legacy and the profound impact it had and continues to have, even on the world today.
