USA Today: “A study released by Temple University found that people who feel
close to a higher power and pray often are more likely to be depressed”

Questions: does religion cause depression? If not what does? Must we merely cope
with depression? How can we overcome depression?

Faith and Depression

I have to say that when I first saw that study I felt an immediate need to comment. So, I listened to your radio show. I have recently come out of a deep depression. The likes of which I did not believe was possible. I was not a Christian. I was definitely living in this secular world and looking for answers. First I must say, it was not money or worldly success. I had that. But,still I found myself spiraling down faster than I could catch myself up. Nothing I did... medication, counselling... nothing in and of itself seemed to work. I was spiritually bankrupt. I did go to therapy and the therapist told me I was going thru a spiritual awakening. He helped me thru that... and I turned my focus on the Lord... I cried out to him and he answered. Did I go to church? Yes, I did engage but even that was not enough... it was not until I got down on my knees and prayed that I was answered. I believe those prayers brought me out of it. I prayed to the Lord everyday... and still do. Yes, church helps... but prayer and communication with the Lord is what lifted me out. I do not believe anything else could have done it. So, I believe that those that pray every day may be that they are already depressed. The question is, did they stick around to see what the results of those prayers were? Because I can tell you the result of mine is a closer relationship with God... and a new purpose to my life. And I do have peace now. Peace unlike anything I have ever experienced before. Perhaps they should do another study and see if those people that are in a depressed state... if they pray to God and Christ our Savior... what those results are. I think they may be astounded.
